They done lost their minds…

I’m home early from work today and the little one is still at daycare (I need a moment…don’t even go there) so I am flipping through the telly. A simple thing I don’t get to do often since either I am required to play with girl child or else she requires use of the telly. So I park over at CNN for a hot moment where they seem to be alternating between Sarah Palin and Michael Jackson coverage.

I cannot even get into Palin right now other than to say she is a nutter butter and I suspect like a bad penny she will turn up again and soon. As for MJ, man died a while ago, why has this man not been buried? Shit, we are just working class folks but when my Momma died, we were able to make arrangements for her in 48 hours….I know she wasn’t famous. Still, please bury this man and let him rest in peace.

Nope, that’s not what I really want to talk about though. What I want to talk about is the man they interviewed who flew from Buffalo New York before he even knew whether or not he was going to win one of the spots at the memorial service. This cat’s name was Dante or something like that and he did in fact win one of these highly coveted slots but what I want to talk about is why did he feel compelled to spend $1500 dollars on a new outfit to wear to the service?

Yes, this man was on national televisiom discussing how he spent $1500 bucks on a new outfit to wear to the memorial service of a man he never met? Look, back in the day, MJ made great music…he is a legend, I know that. Shit, I already wrote about that but come on now all that money on a man you never met?

Am I just a cold hearted bitch? I am sorry but that is insane. Yeah, I did buy a outfit to wear to my own Mom’s memorial service, shit my family joked it was a shame my mother wasn’ there because with the exception of 1 or 2 events I have never been so well dressed. Hell, I must say I looked pretty good…oh, that’s right. It was my mother who had died, a woman who I loved with all my heart and was by most accounts a damn good mother. In that case a new outfit to honor the woman who brought you in the world makes sense. Oh, but I did not spent $1500 on that outfit.

Look, we are clearly a messed up society when the death of a celebrity can compel us to focus so much on someone who many of us have never met. I love me some Sting, seriously Sting and The Police have been a part of my life since I was 10 and I am 36 now…but should Sting die I will not be flying across the ocean to attend his memorial service. I will play his CD’s and remember his music…maybe even drop a tear. Anything else is insanity.

How many folks could have been fed at the local food pantry with money ole Dante spent on the memorial suit?

  1. I was balking at the fact that this grown man flew accross the country to attend the memorial service of a person that he didn’t know and had never met. I bet he owes somebody some child support, too….

Anyway, this whole MJ thing was on another level. I just don’t get it.

  2. Michael was a bright, beautiful gift from God; the world seems darker without him. His music and charity will never be forgotten. I will always love Michael Joseph Jackson. Rest In Peace Michael.

  3. “Wherever MJ is I hope he has found peace.” Ditto everything you said HD.

I am really just amazed at this whole circus that has formed around MJ’s death. Everything is just so . . . extreme.

  4. Hey there,

I really don’t care about how other people spend their money since $1,500 to some people is a fortune and it’s not an extravagant expenditure for someone else (depending on their income status)…

For some people, Michael’s music was so important in their lives that they just HAVE to turn his funeral into a major event that they will remember forever…

    *sigh*

    Only in America…

    *sigh*

This Michael Jackson worship is just baffling… I realize he is a legend…and I will miss him too… but the hoopla over the “lottery” for entrance to his funeral that had 500 million people an hour registering??! Really?

    *shaking my head*

  5. As crazy as it is, I’m surprised that it hasn’t been worse. Everything associated with MJ the entertainer seemed to be extreme. I will be glad when he is buried and folks settle down. The public doesn’t seem to care that the family has lost a loved one.

In their adoration some fans are not realizing that they are not going to an MJ concert, but rather to his memorial service.

Wherever MJ is I hope he has found peace.

  6. wait–what? they are using spots at a memorial service as prizes??? what? how sick is our society??
